Now featuring previously unheard recordings of the original rehearsal in 1963
Today's Video of the Day is a documentary about the remastering of Britten's War Requiem. Now mixed in Dolby Atmos, listeners can experience what it was like being in the room during the initial rehearsals.
Featuring 2 discs, the first contains the remasters of the original recordings in dolby atmos and the second, recordings of the rehearsals, including discussions in the control room between Benjamin Britten, Peter Pears and record producer John Culshaw.
November 1940, during WW2, Coventry Cathedral was razed to the ground. In 1962, Britten’s War Requiem received its world premiere, commissioned for the reconsecration of the new Cathedral. Britten set the entire text of the Latin Requiem Mass as well as interpolating nine of Wilfred Owen’s harrowing poems from the trenches.
The War Requiem was recorded between 3-10 Jan, 1963 in London’s Kingsway Hall by Decca’s John Culshaw and engineer Kenneth Wilkinson. Britten conducted the London Symphony Orchestra and Chorus, the Bach Choir, and the choirboys of Highgate School.
