The best new classical albums this week (February 17, 2023)

Tuesday, February 14, 2023

This album of famous choruses from Verdi's operas has been recorded using Spatial Audio with Dolby Atmos technology in the auditorium of Teatro alla Scala, so should be an overwhelming experience, particularly if listening via Apple Music. It is also a 70th birthday present for Riccardo Chailly (his birthday is on February 20), who has been Musical Director of La Scala since 2015.

'Passacalle de La Follie' is an exploration of French Baroque chamber music from counter-tenor Philippe Jaroussky, L'Arpeggiata and Christina Pluhar.

'Befreit: A Soul Surrendered' is an album of late-Romantic songs by Richard Strauss (including Morgen), Mahler (Kindertotenlieder), Johanna Müller-Hermann (1878-1941) and Margarete Schweikert (1887-1957).

Amandine Beyer and Gli Incogniti have had two albums shortlisted for Gramophone Awards in the Baroque Instrumental category in recent years – accounts of Corelli's Concerti Grossi and Vivaldi's Concertos for Two Violins – and here they set their sights on Biber's Mystery (Rosary) Sonatas. The recording arose out of a collaboration with the Rosas dance company, the first performance of which took place on February 16 at the Concertgebouw, Brugge.
