Sibelius's Fifth in a south London car park

Tuesday, June 24, 2014

Peckham Rye car park in south London has become a mecca for trendy types, a makeshift bar on its roof and spectacular views over the city luring hundreds here on sunny weekends. Promoter ‘Multi Story’ thought it might be an idea to cram an orchestra into the resonant space below the top floor, cramming an audience in equally tightly, too. In the brilliant sunshine of last weekend, the Multi-Story Orchestra played a new piece by Kate Whitley – the brains behind the performances – and Sibelius’s Fifth Symphony. No gimmicks, not even a spoken introduction, just raucous applause when the conductor Christopher Stark arrived at his music stand and hard, keen listening from the shocked, fascinated and enchanted crowd who came to listen.
