Tango, milonga y final. Tiempo del hombre. Truco Suite. Tres piezas de Otoño. Cafe para dos. Sonatina caótica Víctor Villadangos, Giorgio Mirto gtrs Brilliant Classics 9088 (63’) Colourful and characterful music for two guitars from a Buenos Aires native Prize-winning guitarist/composer Maximo Diego Pujol (b1957) is a graduate of the Juan José Castro Conservatory and currently teaches at the Manuel de Falla Superior Conservatory of Music in Buenos Aires, his place of birth. His music for two guitars, of which this disc is the first complete recording, is tuneful and attractive after the manner of Piazzolla, inspired by the tango, milonga, candombe and chacarera as well as the everyday life of the colourful, bustling city in which he still lives. Giorgio Mirto, who plays a 10‑string guitar, is an Italian guitarist/composer, while Víctor Villadangos is another native of Buenos Aires and graduate of the Juan José Castro Conservatory where he is professor of guitar; he also holds the same post at the Manuel de Falla Conservatory. Pujol’s Tango, milonga y final has been widely recorded and performed, and it’s easy to hear why, so expertly does it exploit traditional dance and contemporary popular music. But one wonders why the characterful Truco Suite, the richly textured Tres piezas de Otoño or the substantial Sonatina caótica are not equally well known. Perhaps the present disc will rectify that, especially given these stylish, spontaneous-sounding performances, which effortlessly reconcile the tension between ostensibly classical music and what is more properly a popular yet sophisticated folk idiom that seems so much a part of the culture from which it sprang.
