The young French countertenor Philippe Jaroussky draws people into the concert hall who otherwise might never listen to classical music. His high, clear voice of astounding beauty has been put to the service of a wide range of music. A classy addition to any opera cast, Jaroussky is a great stylist whose artistry continues to grow and always impresses.

Among the recording highlights for Jaroussky this year were an album of duets with fellow countertenor Max Emanuel Cencic (Virgin Classics 070943-2):

And a new recording of Fauré's Requiem with Paavo Järvi and the Paris Orchestra. Our critic, Marc Rochester, commented: 'This recording of the 1893 version of Fauré's Requiem is notable for the presence of Philippe Jaroussky. Traditionally sung by a boy's or a female voice, the real shock is just how well suited Jaroussky's countertenor turns out to be for the "Pie Jesu". There is astonishing purity even in the very highest register and a level of restrained drama that transforms this into something of quite extraordinary impact.'

Below is a film of Jaroussky's performance of the 'Pie Jesu' from Fauré's Requiem:
