An exhibition of works on paper by the composer John Cage opens at the Hayward Gallery, at London's Southbank Centre, tomorrow.

Best known as an avant-garde composer, Cage only began to practise seriously as a visual artist in his mid-60s, producing more than 600 prints and 260 drawings and watercolours, using the same chance-determined procedures in his art as in his compositions. Chance-techniques will also play a role in the hanging of the exhibition, a computer-generated random number programme will determine the height and arrangement – a method Cage used himself in several exhibitions.

The exhibition opens on August 12, and runs until September 18. Admission is free – for more information, visit Hayward Gallery. Then on September 13, you can hear an evening of music by John Cage performed by the ensemble Apartment House at the Queen Elizabeth Hall.
