This coming Sunday, BBC Four is broadcasting a 90-minute documentary on how the Glyndebourne Festival, which began 80 years ago, grew out of the love story of founder John Christie and his opera-singer wife Audrey Mildmay into the prestigious annual event it is today.
Marking both the 80th anniversary of the Glyndebourne Festival and the 150th anniversary year of Richard Strauss, The Untold History tells the story of the creation of the opera house and also gives viewers behind-the-scenes access to rehearsals and preparations for this year’s new production of Richard Jones’s Der Rosenkavalier – the festival’s first new production of the opera in 32 years.
Glyndebourne: The Untold History is broadcast on Sunday June 22 at 7.30pm; the full performance of Der Rosenkavalier is available to watch, also from June 22, at at bbc.co.uk/arts
