The first solo exhibition of paintings by Stephen Hough – pianist, composer, and multiple Gramophone Award-winner – opens tomorrow in London. Entitled Appassionato, it presents what are described as 'small, intimate and jewel-like' works.

The title, appassionato, 'indicates intense feeling; it suggests passion as in "passive", something done to us rather than by us.' According to Hough, 'I think there's something interesting philosophically behind this concept related to abstract art: the viewer as active, as perceiver, as "artist" as much as the painting itself'.

You can also see Stephen Hough in his more familiar guise, when he begins his residency with the BBC Symphony Orchestra on October 12, performing Hummel's Piano Concerto at the Barbican.
