The Elgar Society has ensured Sir Edward Elgar's 1844 Broadwood square piano will be maintained and tuned for at least the next five years by adopting the instrument. Owned by the Royal Academy of Music, the piano is on permanent loan to the Cobbe Collection Trust, and is one of 50 historic instruments kept at Hatchlands Park near Guildford. All instruments in the collection are supported by the new 'Adopt an Instrument' scheme, and are maintained in playing order.

The piano was selected by Elgar in 1898 for installation in Birchwood Lodge, his family's summer residence near Malvern, and was played by the composer during the composition of his Sea Pictures and The Dream of Gerontius.
