Benjamin Britten’s famous opera Peter Grimes is to be performed on Aldeburgh beach in celebration of the composer’s 100th birthday next year. Taking place in June 2013, the production will form part of the 66th Aldeburgh Festival, which was founded by Britten and Peter Pears in 1948.

Peter Grimes was first performed to mark the reopening of Sadler’s Wells after the Second World War; during Britten’s anniversary year the work will be staged around the world by various opera houses and festivals in cities including Berlin, Stockholm, Tokyo, Salt Lake City and Tenerife.

Directed by Tim Albery, the Aldeburgh production will take place alongside Britten concerts at Snape Maltings Concert Hall and a Grimes journey in the town led by Punchdrunk.
