Roderick Williams sings the folksong O Waly, Waly on Aldeburgh Beach to launch the 2023 Aldeburgh Festival

Roderick Williams provided one of the highlights of the recent Coronation of King Charles III at Westminster Abbey, but in today's video we see him in very different circumstances – confronting the raw power of the elements on Aldeburgh Beach as he sings the folksong O Waly, Waly. It's a beautiful performance and an evocative film – well worth a look.

The Aldeburgh Festival runs from June 9 to June 25 and – amid a rich and varied programme – will present the world premiere of a new opera called Giant by composer Sarah Angliss and librettist Ross Sutherland. Giant tells the story of the 18th-century 'Irish giant' who was betrayed in the name of science.

Also as part of this year's festival, Roderick Williams will be presenting a masterclass on Britten's songs (June 12) and will also be premiering Ryan Wigglesworth's Vignettes de Jules Renard with the Knussen Chamber Orchestra and Wigglesworth conducting on June 21.
