Robert Trevino has been named as the new chief conductor of the Malmö Symphony Orchestra, starting from autumn 2019.
The 34-year-old American conductor is currently in his second season as Music Director of the Basque National Orchestra (a post that was recently extended to 2022), and has also been seen on the podium of such ensembles as the London Symphony Orchestra, the Leipzig Gewandhaus, the Vienna Symphony, the Zurich Tonhalle Orchestra and others. Prior to that, his CV includes studying with David Zinman as an Aspen Conducting Fellow, and serving as associate conductor for New York City Opera at Lincoln Center 2009-2011, and with the Cincinnati Symphony Orchestra 2011-2015.
Trevino will succeed Marc Soustrot, who will step down after eight years at the helm of the Swedish orchestra.
‘When I first worked with the MSO musicians, I was instantly struck by the eagerness with which they dig deeper into the music, with sincerity and love, but also by their attentiveness for each other as artists and colleagues’, said Trevino. ‘For me, the connection was instant. I have found with the MSO, Malmö Live, and the city of Malmö a place and a moment where social connectivity, the making of wonderful art, reinvention and relevance can all intersect. It is the opportunity of a lifetime to be part of helping this orchestra to define its place in a rapidly developing city. I love the MSO and hope that in my time with them we can make more of the world realise that they should love them too.’
