The Oxford Philomusica, which is currently celebrating its 15th anniversary, has named Maxim Vengerov as the orchestra’s new artist-in-residence. The celebrated violinist first appeared with the Philomusica at the Sheldonian Theatre earlier this year, conducted by artistic director Marios Papadopoulos.

‘I am delighted to have been appointed artist-in-residence with Oxford Philomusica and am looking forward to working regularly with this fantastic orchestra, and collaborating with them to support and celebrate music-making in the great city of Oxford,’ said Vengerov.

The violinist’s three-year residency will begin on December 1, 2013 with a recital of works by Franck, Saint-Saëns and Tchaikovsky. This will be followed in April and early May, 2014 by a three-date tour in Oxford, Manchester and Basingstoke, where Vengerov will play Bruch’s Violin Concerto No 1 and conduct the orchestra in Schumann’s Fourth Symphony. There are plans, too, for student masterclasses as part of Oxford Philomusica’s residency with the University of Oxford.
