The London Symphony Orchestra is to perform two concerts in tribute to Sir Colin Davis, following his death on April 14. The two closing performances of the LSO’s season on June 16 and 18 at the Barbican, which were to be conducted by Davis, will now be dedicated to the LSO’s former president and principal conductor.

On the programme are works and performers, which were closely associated with Sir Colin and his support of young musicians: LSO principal tuba Patrick Harrild will conduct Royal Academy of Music and Guildhall School musicians in a performance of Richard Strauss’s Festmusik der Stadt Wien, while Joseph Wolfe, Sir Colin’s son, will conduct the LSO in his father’s much-loved Berlioz.

In addition, Nikolaj Znaider will play Mozart’s Third Violin Concerto – a work he and Sir Colin planned to perform together; violinist Gordan Nikolitch, who led the LSO for much of Sir Colin’s tenure as principal conductor, will direct the LSO in Beethoven’s Eighth – the symphony that inspired the teenage Davis to become a conductor; and the London Symphony Chorus will close the programme with Brahms's Nänie, based on a poem by Friedrich Schiller‬.

Meanwhile, it has also been announced that Daniel Harding will conduct the LSO in a BBC Prom, which was due to be conducted by Sir Colin Davis on August 20, and which will now be dedicated to the late conductor. On the programme will be Elgar's Symphony No 2, replacing Sibelius's Second Symphony, and works by Tippett and Britten. Davis conducted over 140 Proms during a period of more than 50 years, beginning in 1960.
