In the April issue of Gramophone we pay tribute to one of the great violinists of the 20th century, Yehudi Menuhin, not only with a fascinating cover story by Tully Potter, but also with our very special cover CD, featuring recordings of Menuhin in his prime. 

The recordings are all newly remastered and are drawn from Warner Classics' new 91-disc box-set 'The Menuhin Century – Luxury Edition'. Among the many highlights of the cover CD are the first movement of Bach's Concerto for two violins, BWV1043, recorded in 1933, in which Menuhin is joined by violinist and composer George Enescu, the Orchestre Symphonique de Paris and conductor Pierre Monteux. And there is more Bach in the earliest recording of this collection, from the Queen's Hall, London, in 1929 (when Menuhin was just 13 years old) comes the fourth movement of the Third Sonata, BWV1005, produced by Fred Gaisberg.

Tchaikovsky's music is featured on two tracks: the second movement of the Violin Concerto from a previously unpublished recording of the work from 1959 with the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra and conductor Adrian Boult, and the 'Danse russe' from Swan Lake with the Philharmonia Orchestra and Efrem Kurtz in 1958.

One of the most purely captivating tracks on the CD was made at Abbey Road in 1968; the second movement of Schubert's Piano Trio No 2. Menuhin is here partnered by his sister Hephzibah on piano and cellist Maurice Gendron in a recording that, newly remastered, sounds like it could have been taped just last week.
