During March this year the Los Angeles Philharmonic led by music director Gustavo Dudamel will embark on their first Barbican International Associate residency. Running from March 13 to 17, the series will feature three major concerts of 20th and 21st century music, including European premieres by John Adams, Unsuk Chin and Joseph Pereira.

At the heart of events is an international symposium entitled ‘Future Play: music systems of the 21st century’, which focuses on educational issues. Taking place from March 13 to 15, the symposium explores the continued need for ensembles, concert venues and conservatoires, and culminates in ‘Discover Dudamel’, an open rehearsal of 100 mixed ability orchestral musicians from London and Los Angeles conducted by Dudamel.

Further highlights of ‘Future Play’ include an introductory talk from John Adams, a keynote speech by Peter Sellars, panel discussions chaired by Barbican managing director Sir Nicholas Kenyon and Los Angeles Philharmonic Association president Deborah Borda, and workshops and breakout sessions.
