BBC Radio 3 is launching a new weekend schedule in response to budget cuts announced in 2011. Controller Roger Wright has posted a blog in which he explains that although the changes are ‘the result of having to work with a reduced budget and more limited resources,' the station is ‘keen to protect the range of what we do’.

Among the major changes will be the introduction of live classical concerts on weekends with 'Live in Concert'. There will also be a new film music programme presented by film critic Matthew Sweet as part of the BBC’s 'Sound of Cinema' season this autumn, more consistent jazz programming, more new music programming in an extended 'Hear and Now', and a new Monday slot for 'Opera on 3'. 'World Routes', a diverse but costly programme, will no longer be broadcast for the time being, while the 'Early Music Show' will be reduced by one programme.

‘BBC Radio 3 brings more high quality live classical music to audiences than any other broadcaster, with over 600 complete concerts a year and every BBC Prom live,’ said Wright. ‘Although we have had to make tough decisions in order to make savings in line with the rest of the BBC, I’m pleased that we are able to offer listeners an increase in the amount of live classical music at weekends. This will broaden the access to performances from across the UK and increase Radio 3’s offer of “the best seat in the house” at public concerts.

'In re-appraising the schedule we have prioritised protecting the unique range of the station’s classical, world music, jazz and arts content whilst reducing our overall output. We have had to make difficult decisions with a much reduced budget in order to ensure the best value for money for the licence fee payer and the best offering for our audience.’
