The winners of the 2014 Gilmore Young Artist Award have been named as 19-year-old Curtis Institute of Music graduate Andrew Hsu and 16-year-old Juilliard School student Llewellyn Sanchez-Werner. The two pianists will each receive $15,000 over the next two years as part of the biennial prize given through the Gilmore International Keyboard Festival in Michigan.

The Young Artist Award recognises promising American pianists aged up to 21, and runs alongside the adult Gilmore Artist Award. Candidates for the Young Artist Award are nominated confidentially by music professionals. The nominated candidates are then evaluated for their ‘pianism and musical promise’ by a six-member judging panel over an extended period of time without their knowledge. In addition to the cash prize, the Award also includes a new piano work commissioned specifically for each artist and appearances at the 2014 Irving S Gilmore International Keyboard Festival.

Founded in 1989, the Gilmore Young Artist Award has recognised 28 young pianists including Christopher Taylor, Jonathan Biss, Yuja Wang, Orion Weiss, Kirill Gerstein and Orli Shaham.
