This month’s edition of Gramophone – on sale in UK newsagents now – explores Liszt. As we mark the composer's bicentenary, Jeremy Nicholas asks what impact his virtuosity, charisma and devastating good looks had on his reputation, then and now.

Sir Andrew Davis, whose recording of Holst’s Planets is released by Chandos this month, talks to Gramophone about the composer’s music beyond his signature work (and, also from Chandos, you can listen to Richard Hickox conducting the St Paul’s Suite on the Gramophone Player – launch the Player by clicking the link on the right of the screen).

In our annual Education Supplement, Royal Academy of Music principal Jonathan Freeman-Attwood reports on the role junior colleges play, while violinist Jack Liebeck talks about where music and the Large Hadron Collider, well, collide.

The Gramophone Collection delves into the discography of Dvorák’s Cello Concerto, with Jacqueline du Pré, Pablo Casals and Mstislav Rostropovich jostling for Rob Cowan’s attention among the contenders – you can listen to excerpts from some of his selected choices on the Gramophone Player.

Plus of course more than 140 reviews of the latest releases and reissues including Christoph Eschenbach on Bruckner’s Symphony No 6, James Ehnes in Mendelssohn’s Violin Concerto, Murray Perahia playing Brahms’s Handel Variations, and Bach from the ensemble Pygmalion.

In the Hi-fi news and reviews section, audio editor Andrew Everard listens to Marantz’s new network music system, while film score composer and the man behind the music for The King's Speech, Alexandre Desplat, is this month’s My Music interviewee.
