British conductor Paul Daniel has been named music director of the Orchestre National Bordeaux Aquitaine from the 2013-14 season. He will conduct a minimum of 16 weeks a year and will also conduct one opera each season for Opéra National de Bordeaux.
The former music director of English National Opera will combine his role in Bordeaux with his responsibilities as principal conductor and artistic director of the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra of Galicia in Santiago de Compostela, a position he takes up in January 2013.
Daniel is currently principal conductor of the West Australian Symphony Orchestra, but will relinquish the role in December 2013. He has recorded extensively for Chandos, Linn, Aeon and Naxos.
