This month's new content has now been loaded onto the Gramophone Player, and is available to stream now. Listen to movements or tracks from all of this month’s Editor's Choice recordings, plus excerpts from the Reissue and DVD of the Month. There’s also a newly transferred Recording From the Archive, a new complete work, and you can compare samples from this month’s The Collection. All Editor's Choice tracks click through to the Gramophone review, and all tracks have a link to a retailer.
Top of the March 2011 Playlist is a track from that issue’s Recording of the Month – 'Echoes of Time', a recording on DG of works by composers whose lives were influenced by Soviet life and politics, performed by violinist Lisa Batiashvili. Listen to the third movement of Shostakovich’s Violin Concerto No 1, performed with the Bavarian Radio Symphony Orchestra and Esa-Pekka Salonen.
The other nine Editor’s Choice recordings include viola player Lawrence Power playing Hindemith, Mahler from Sir Simon Rattle and the Berlin Philharmonic Orchestra (on EMI), and also from Jukka-Pekka Saraste and the WDR Symphony Orchestra, Cologne (on Profil), Pierné’s Piano Concerto played by Jean-Efflam Bavouzet (Chandos), a third set of Liszt Discoveries from Leslie Howard (on Hyperion), and Tallis and Byrd from David Skinner and his Alamire choir (Obsidian). Listen to excerpts from them all.
You can watch an excerpt from the DVD of the Month – Gounod’s Mireille (on the FRA Productions label), and listen to (and, in the case of the DVD recommendation, view) excerpts from the four leading versions of Prokofiev’s Peter and the Wolf, the focus of this month’s The Collection.
Somm has kindly allowed us to stream a full work from its new addition to their Beecham series to accompany our cover story – hear Beecham conduct Delius’s In a Summer Garden – while Nonesuch has offered two tracks from Steve Reich recordings to illustrate our interview with the composer, which you can also read in the March edition.
As with every month, we’ve newly transferred an LP from the Archives, and this month’s recording is a tribute to the tenor Hugues Cuenod, heard here singing French and English Songs of the 16th and 17th centuries.
Every track has a direct link through to where you can buy the recording. To launch the Player simply click the button on the right-hand side of this screen (you need to be registered and logged in) – or to find out more about how it works, click here. UK subscribers should receive their copy of the March 2011 edition of Gramophone from February 2 onwards - the magazine is available on the UK news stands from Monday.
Happy listening!
