The Bournemouth Symphony Orchestra has named Maxime Tortelier, son of Yan Pascal Tortelier, as its young conductor in association. The Royal Academy of Music post-graduate will work closely with the orchestra’s principal conductor, Kirill Karabits, over the course of his one-year appointment, and conduct several concerts as part of the BSO’s 2012-13 season. His first performances in September will include works by Wagner, Mozart, Elgar and Mendelssohn in Andover, Honiton and Chippenham.

Tortelier was one of four promising candidates competing for the position at the beginning of July. Each budding maestro conducted the BSO in several works before a secret ballot selected two finalists and, following a second round, the successful candidate.

Having worked with the BBC Concert Orchestra, Baltimore Symphony Orchestra, Tasmanian Symphony Orchestra and Royal Scottish National Orchestra, Tortelier is no stranger to the professional podium. In 2011 he founded the Marylebone Philharmonia, a symphony orchestra of outstanding musicians graduating from the Royal Academy of Music.
