Mariss Jansons has extended his contract as chief conductor of the Bavarian Radio Symphony Orchestra and Bavarian Radio Choir for a further three years until August 31, 2018. Jansons, who yesterday was presented with the 2013 Ernst von Siemens Prize worth €250,000, is also chief conductor of the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra.

“I would like to thank the Symphonieorchester des Bayerischen Rundfunks for the trust they have in me,’ he said. ‘Without trust, it is impossible to work together. It has now been 10 years since we started our close relationship: I feel privileged to have spent this wonderful and, as I believe, fruitful time with such an excellent ensemble. I am looking forward very much to our common future, to achieving new goals and to realising exciting ideas.’

Jansons became chief conductor of the Munich-based orchestra and choir in 2003, following former chiefs Eugen Jochum, Rafael Kubelík, Sir Colin Davis and Lorin Maazel.
