The Los Angeles Philharmonic is to celebrate the 10th anniversary of its Walt Disney Concert Hall with 'insideOUT', a number of special events taking place during September, October and November. The venue opened to the public in 2003 with a series of free preview concerts for 18,000 inhabitants of Los Angeles, including 3,000 school children from over 65 schools.

Led by music director Gustavo Dudamel and featuring conductor laureate Esa-Pekka Salonen, the 2013 series will include a free Open House concert with the LA Phil performing alongside Youth Orchestra LA, to be simulcast in Grand Park (Sept 29); three free community performances of Prokofiev’s Peter and the Wolf narrated by Julie Andrews (Sept 25, 26, 28); an Opening Night Gala with Yo-Yo Ma featuring an installation by video artist and director Netia Jones (Sept 30); world premieres including Frank Zappa’s 200 Motels (Oct 23); and public forums with Frank Gehry, designer of the concert hall (Oct 2, 15). Further artists appearing include Yefim Bronfman, Pedro Carneiro and Leif Ove Andsnes.

‘One of the primary considerations when conceiving the design for Walt Disney Concert Hall was to preserve the iconic importance of the LA Phil, but break down the often imposing scale of a traditional concert hall,’ said Gehry. ‘Walt Disney Concert Hall is not just a building for music, but a building for the people. From the inside out, the building was designed to respond to its surrounding, and serve as a gathering place.’

The LA Phil has also launched two new digital ventures: WDCH10, an online exploration of Walt Disney Concert Hall, including performance highlights, interactive 360 degree videos, architectural information and interviews with conductors and soloists; and Concert Master, which enables those who are less familiar with classical music to choose a concert based on lifestyle and entertainment preferences.
