Glyndebourne boss Gus Christie has disclosed in an email to members that the three new productions for next summer’s 80th anniversary season will be Der Rosenkavalier, La Traviata – and Mozart’s juvenile opera La finta Giardiniera.

In his first season as music director, Robin Ticciati will open the festival with Richard Strauss’s Der Rosenkavalier, directed by Richard Jones, with Kate Royal, who started her career in the Glyndebourne chorus, as the Marschallin.

Ticciati will also conduct the second new production of the 2014 season, Mozart’s La finta Giardiniera, written when Mozart was only 18, which comes to Glyndebourne for the first time and will be directed by Frederic Wake-Walker making his Festival debut. Christie says: ‘This miraculous early work, an opera buffa, is musically and dramatically a study for two of Mozart’s later masterpieces, Le nozze di Figaro and Così fan tutte.’

Verdi’s La Traviata, the third new production, by Tom Cairns, returns to the Festival for the first time since 1988. Sir Mark Elder will conduct the London Philharmonic with soprano Venera Gimadieva making her Glyndebourne debut as Violetta.
