Three major international orchestras will take up residency at the Barbican next season, the details of which were announced yesterday. The Leipzig Gewandhaus, New York Philharmonic and the Royal Concertgebouw orchestras will join regular resident ensembles the London Symphony and the BBC Symphony orchestras with visits to the City of London venue.

The Leipzig Gewandhaus Orchestra and their chief conductor Riccardo Chailly will perform a Beethoven symphony cycle and five UK premieres; Alan Gilbert will bring his New York Philharmonic, along with mezzo Joyce DiDonato (Gramophone's current Artist of the Year) and pianist Lang Lang to the Barbican, where performances will include a UK premiere by Thomas Adès and a Young People’s Concert narrated by Jamie Bernstein, daughter of Leonard; and the Royal Concertgebouw’s concerts will be conducted by Mariss Jansons, Bernard Haitink and Nikolaus Harnoncourt.

Other season highlights include, from the LSO, Valery Gergiev conducting a Stravinsky and Tchaikovsky series, a completion of a Beethoven piano concerto cycle with Sir Colin Davis and Mitsuko Uchida (which will begin on May 26), an artist portrait of Anne-Sophie Mutter, concerts to mark Sofia Gubaidulina’s 80th and Steve Reich’s 75th birthdays, and a weekend centred around Honegger’s Jeanne d’Arc au Bûcher conducted by Marin Alsop.

The BBC Symphony Orchestra will perform a complete Sibelius symphony cycle with conductors Sakari Oramo, Jukka-Pekka Saraste and Neeme Järvi, and programmes focusing on the music of Brett Dean, Arvo Pärt and Jonathan Harvey. The Nordic theme continues with a project led by Esa-Pekka Salonen and Karita Mattila which will include the world premiere of a new violin sonata by Magnus Lindberg, and UK premieres of works by Salonen.

The seaons also offers a focus on English-language oratorios, to include performances of Britten’s War Requiem, Handel’s Saul and Messiah, Walton’s Belshazzar's Feast, Haydn’s The Seasons, Mendelssohn’s Elijah, Tippett’s A Child of our Time and Elgar’s The Dream of Gerontius. Finally, the Kronos Quartet host a residency in January, which will include a concert at the Hackney Empire, a theatre to the east of the City.
