This month's Gramophone Player opens with a track from the wonderful new Gershwin disc from Riccardo Chailly and pianist Stefano Bollani on Decca. The other nine Editor’s Choice recordings include Easdale Film Music from Chandos, Testament Record’s fascinating exploration of Deryck Cooke’s completion of Mahler’s Tenth Symphony, Antonio Pappano conducting Rachmaninov’s Second Symphony on EMI, and Christina Pluhar and L’Arpeggiata’s fabulous disc of Montervdi’s Vespers on Virgin Classics. Listen to tracks from all these – as well as watch an excerpt of the DVD of the month, Donizetti’s Maria Stuarda, from C Major.
The issue contains a 25-page guide to summer festivals around the world, and to help us celebrate the season, three festivals – Progetto Martha Argerich in Lugano, Music@Menlo and the Saito Kinen Festival – have kindly offered us an illustration of the super music-making their visitors will find: listen to live recordings.
The Gramophone Collection in the May issue of the magazine is Strauss’s Der Rosenkavalier, and you can hear – and watch – movements from three of the recommended recordings on the Player. There’s also an excerpt of Montserrat Caballé singing the role of the Marschallin in her only recording of the opera, from Glyndebourne.
Finally, following our Collection feature earlier this year of Prokofiev’s Peter and the Wolf, we’ve another recording for you to hear: this month’s newly digitised archive recording features Igor Markevitch and the Philharmonia Orchestra, with Wilfred Pickles narrating.
Every track has a direct link through to where you can buy the recording. To launch the Player simply click the button on the right-hand side of this screen (you need to be registered and logged in) – or to find out more about how it works, click here.
Happy listening!
