Baritone Gerald Finley on Schubert's Winterreise

James Jolly
Monday, February 3, 2014

Schubert's last song-cycle Winterreise, written in the final year of the composer's life, is a rite of passage in many singers' careers. And the Canadian baritone Gerald Finley is no exception, the latest in a distinguished lineage to record the work. With pianist Julius Drake, he has made a recording for Hyperion, to be released on March 3. James Jolly spoke to Finley about the work in another Milestones podcast, made in association with EFG International, the private bank for classical music.

Gerald Finley and Julius Drake are currently performing Winterreise as part of a US tour – performances remaining are at CCM Corbett Auditorium, Cincinnati (February 5), NEC's Jordan Hall, Boston (Feb 7), Shriver Hall, Baltimore (Feb 9), Perelman Theater, Kimmel Center, Philadelphia (Feb 11) and Zankel Hall, Carnegie Hall, New York (Feb 13).

Finley and Drake have won three Solo Vocal Awards in the Gramophone Classical Music Awards – for songs by Schumann, Britten and Barber, all for Hyperion.
