Too many themes sound like compromises or trade-offs
Large-scale compositional collaboration is still rather rare, but this commemoration of the Great War and its emotional aftermath unites two very similar sensibilities. The singing is strong and effective, with the treble choir particularly effective, and the text clearly enunciated. And yet there seems to be not so much a hollow as an absence at the heart of the music, and not one that can be attributed to the doomed youth of conflict. Too many themes sound like compromises or trade-offs. It makes the music more accessible, but less impactful. A remarkable project, nonetheless.
