The current Acting Director of Music at Coventry Cathedral will join the College later in the year

Pembroke College, Cambridge, has announced the appointment of Luke Fitzgerald as its new Director of Music. Fitzgerald will succeed Anna Lapwood, who has served in the role since 2016 and will be stepping down at the end of this academic year to focus on her career as a concert organist.
Fitzgerald joins Pembroke from Coventry Cathedral, where he currently serves as Acting Director of Music. He began his tenure at Coventry Cathedral as Assistant Director of Music in 2021, working closely with Director of Music Rachel Mahon during a vibrant period that included Coventry's designation as City of Culture and the Cathedral's Diamond Jubilee celebrations.
Prior to his time in Coventry, Fitzgerald held organ posts at several Cambridge colleges, including Gonville and Caius, Trinity, and Jesus Colleges. He completed both his Bachelor of Arts and Master of Philosophy degrees in Music at the University of Cambridge. His musical interests are diverse, encompassing innovative programming that spans various centuries, disciplines, and continents, with particular expertise in opera, Baroque, and contemporary classical music.
Expressing his enthusiasm for the new role, Fitzgerald stated, 'I am absolutely delighted to have the chance to nurture the thriving musical life of Pembroke College, its Chapel and Choirs, building on the stellar work of Anna Lapwood.'
Professor Sam Barrett, Pembroke’s Director of Studies in Music, expressed excitement about Fitzgerald's appointment, noting that he brings a wealth of experience and a compelling vision for developing music across all aspects of college life. The Dean, Dr. James Gardom, also welcomed Fitzgerald, praising his musicianship, vision for the future of music in the College and Chapel, and his friendly, caring attitude.
Anna Lapwood, the outgoing Director of Music, has been instrumental in transforming Pembroke's musical landscape since her appointment in 2016. She founded the Pembroke College Girls’ Choir and enhanced the reputation of the College Choir, leading to frequent appearances on BBC Radio 3 and Classic FM. Lapwood's initiatives, such as the 'Play Like a Girl' campaign and the Cambridge Organ Experience for Girls, have encouraged more women and girls to pursue the organ. In 2024, she was awarded an MBE for her services to music.
Fitzgerald is set to begin his tenure at Pembroke College later this year.
