The BBC Singers has today announced Jonathan Manners as its new Director with immediate effect. It comes just before the start of the BBC Proms this Friday, in which the Singers will perform in seven Proms, and also coincides with the group’s centenary year.

Manners has been Producer of the group since 2016, responsible for their artistic direction and their broadcast output. Earlier this year, the Singers received a Royal Philharmonic Society Ensemble Award following a tumultuous year in which the BBC attempted to disband the group in spring 2023.

Following widespread support from the industry, the proposal was reversed and the Singers’ future guaranteed with the BBC partnering with vocal ensemble VOCES8’s Foundation in February. Simon Webb, Head of Orchestras and Choirs at the BBC, has since expressed it was a 'mistake' to begin the group's termination as part of his new financial strategy in 2023.

Speaking of his appointment, Manners said: ‘I am thrilled to be stepping up to the role of Director of the BBC Singers, whilst retaining the artistic leadership of the group, which has been such a rewarding responsibility for nearly 9 years ... It’s an honour to continue to represent the individual members of the BBC Singers, and to champion their incredible artistry and musicianship’.

Simon Webb added: 'Jonny has done a stellar job as Producer of the BBC Singers, driving many of their inspired collaborations with the likes of Laura Mvula, Anna Lapwood, Abel Selaocoe, Clare Teal, Clive Myrie and Sofi Jeannin, and he has deservedly been promoted to Director. His experience with the choir and his creativity, ambition and passion for choral music makes him the ideal leader and I look forward to working with him'.

The BBC Singers will perform in the First Night of the Proms alongside the BBC Symphony Orchestra and conductor Elim Chan on Friday 19 July.
