The Listening Room Episode 97 (5.6.20)
Friday, June 5, 2020
James Jolly's regular playlist includes Robert Trevino conducting Beethoven, Masato Suzuki playing Bach, Martin Fröst reinventing Vivaldi for the clarinet and Yuja Wang playing Rachmaninov. Plus pre-release tracks from Aurora Orchestra, Tenebrae, Fatma Said, Augustin Hadelich and Sir Mark Elder and the Hallé
A new Beethoven symphony cycle from a little-known conductor is likely to pique the curiosity so I've included the Eighth from the Malmö Symphony and Robert Trevino; a sprightly account that features some fine woodwind playing. It's a cycle that I'm just getting to grips with, but there are some impressive performances along the way.
A few concertos this week: a guitar concerto by Chris Brubeck played by Sharon Isbin (the subject of a recent Gramophone Podcast), a putative and quite delightful Vivaldi 'clarinet concerto' played with great style by Martin Fröst (the subject of last week's Gramophone Podcast) and a Bach harpsichord concerto played by Masato Suzuki, carrying on the family tradition and service to the music of the great JSB.
For piano fans, there's Chopin from the estimable Lukas Geniušas and Rachmaninov from Yuja Wang, and for choral music buffs, Stravinsky's slightly thorny Mass and Ola Gjeilo's altogether more silky Dark Night.
More new music comes courtesy of a favourite composer of mine, Anna Clyne – the evocative and exquisitely played DANCE, and a haunting piece by Max Richter from a forthcoming release featuring the fine Aurora Orchestra and Nicholas Collon.
And pre-release tracks introduce us to the recorded debut of Fatma Said (a singer to watch out for) singing Bizet, Dvořák from Augustin Hadelich and Charles Owen and more ravishing Debussy from Sir Mark Elder and the superb Hallé Orchestra.
