Daniil Trifonov plays Stravinsky, Paavo Järvi conducts Tchaikovsky, Mark Simpson's Geysir, Henze for mandolin and pre-release tracks by Maki Namekawa and Christian-Pierre La Marca

The pre-Christmas releases bring many treasures, and I've dipped in and pulled out some gems. From our current Gramophone cover artist, Paavo Järvi we've Tchaikovsky's Francesca da Rimini from the first album in a symphony cycle with Zurich's Tonhalle Orchestra, that will turn the attention on this exciting new conductor-orchestra partnership. The pianist Daniil Trifonov plays Stravinsky's Three Movements from 'Petrushka' from a wonderful new album on DG that gathers together a terrific programme of Russian music, and I've also chosen a performance of Dvořák's charming Bagatelles featuring five members of the same family, the Moreaus of which the cellist Edgar is the best known.

For fans of Baroque and earlier music, we've Vivaldi from Europa Galante, Handel from Dorothee Meilds as well as a keyboard suite played by Pierre Hantaï, and some enchanting music by Clancy Eccles from a magical new album from Théotime Langlois de Swarte and Thomas Dunford.

New music comes courtesy of Mark Simpson, who talks to Martin Cullingford in this week's Gramophone Podcast about his new work Geysir, a striking piece by Mariella Cassar-Cordina from an album of music by Maltese composers, and - prior to its full release on Friday (November 27) a movement from Philip Glass's recent Piano Sonata. And from Hans Werner Henze, a work for the unusual, though effective, combination of mandolin, guitar and harp played by three top-class musicians.

A Hugo Wolf string quartet, an organ transcription of Samuel Barber's perennial favourite, his Adagio for strings, and opera arias by Rossini, Tchaikovsky and Puccini complete the menu, all rounded off with a taster from Christian-Pierre La Marca's forthcoming recording 'Cello 360' (also due out on Friday).
