Mahler/Cooke Symphony No 10
LSO, Philharmonia / Berthold Goldschmidt
 Testament SBT31457

Testament offers a striking revival of Mahler’s Tenth Symphony, completed by Deryck Cooke. Of course, as Gramophone’s David Gutman noted, “Not everyone has been seduced by the notion of a performable Tenth”. But there can be no denying that Testament’s latest retrieval holds a very special place in the Mahlerian canon. This 1964 Proms recording of the LSO under Berthold Goldschmidt is our only surviving world premiere of a Mahler symphony. “What it must have been to experience the finale’s flute melody for the first time outside a BBC studio”, Gutman wrote in his review. “Goldschmidt gives this exquisite moment all the time in the world.”
