Conductor Michael Waldron talks to Arnold specialist George Hall on the music of the often-overlooked British 20th century composer
In February, I attended the launch of a new album featuring works by Malcolm Arnold (1921–2006). A highly prolific 20th-century British composer, Arnold enjoyed widespread success during his lifetime – his score for the 1957 film The Bridge on the River Kwai earned him an Oscar – yet, for some reason, he has not maintained the enduring appreciation of the likes of Britten, Tippett, or Walton.
It was therefore encouraging to attend the launch surrounded by Arnold supporters, including conductor Michael Waldron, whose latest release with Orchid Classics showcases the impressive breadth of Arnold’s output. Featuring works such as the Organ Concerto, Double Violin Concerto, John Clare Cantata, and the first-ever recording of Two Ceremonial Psalms, this album suggests that the tide may be turning for the legacy of Malcolm Arnold!
To mark the album’s release, Michael Waldron speaks with Arnold specialist and programme notes writer George Hall about the recording process:
