VOCES8 and Jack Liebeck perform Caroline Shaw's 'And the swallow' ahead of their LIVE From London concert exploring our relationship with birds
Video of the day sees a performance of Caroline Shaw’s ‘And the swallow’ by VOCES8 and violinist Jack Liebeck. The addition of violin solo, written by Christopher Moore, came as a response to Vaughan Williams’ ‘The Lark Ascending’ and will appear alongside a brand new adaptation of the work for soloist, choir and orchestra in Live From London’s next concert stream, ‘The Lost Birds’ on Saturday 15 October.
Setting psalm 84’s message of divine worship, the natural imagery created through Shaw’s deep harmonic resonances, and here with the addition of a violin, explores a spirituality and reverence in nature. Extended vocal techniques and range suggest a wider perspective of the world, and a true meaning of divinity, through the vision of a swallow.
Celebrating Ralph Vaughan Williams’ 150th anniversary, LIVE From London The Lost Birds is streamed on 15 October 7pm and features Jack Liebeck performing a new adaptation of ‘The Lark Ascending’ for choir, orchestra and soloist, alongside the ‘Hebrides’ Overture, the concert premiere of Christopher Tin’s ‘The Lost Birds’ and new arrangements of choral favourites by Eric Whitacre and Caroline Shaw - all conducted by Barnaby Smith.
