Video of the day: Lucy Crowe sings Purcell’s ‘The Plaint’

Wednesday, January 27, 2021

A captivating live performance of Purcell's haunting ‘The Plaint’ by La Nuova Musica and Lucy Crowe from this year's Baroque at the Edge festival in London

Surely the earliest festival of the year, Baroque at the Edge (curated by Gramophone’s Lindsay Kemp) took place online on January 7-10, and included six concerts recorded at LSO St Luke’s in London. The Festival invites leading musicians from all genres to ‘take the music of the baroque and see where it leads them’, and this year included live synthesizer Bach, Monteverdi mixed with 20th-century Latin American popular song, and baroque ensemble La Nuova Musica treading the common ground between baroque and folk. From that concert, here’s some ‘straight’ baroque: Lucy Crowe in Purcell’s devastating ‘The Plaint’ from The Fairy Queen.

Every concert filmed at Baroque at the Edge 2021 is available to buy for £10, or £55 for all six, from Baroque at the Edge. They can then be listened to on demand until March 31, 2021.

And you can watch Lucy Crowe in conversation with Sara Mohr-Pietsch on Saturday, January 30 at 4pm: baroqueattheedge.co.uk
