Today’s Video of the Day is a particularly poignant one for Good Friday – a moving meditation on the Garden of Gethsemane by British composer Deborah Pritchard, performed by Bulgarian violinist Greta Mutlu and filmed by Australian filmmaker Theresa Thomas, three creatives of differing nationalities all based in the East End of London. It was filmed locally in Haggerston Park, a location chosen after Thomas was inspired by the emerging blossom, and the work will be performed live at Shoreditch Church on Easter Day.

‘Written over lockdown, Gethsemane for solo violin portrays the tranquillity of the Garden of Gethsemane through a deeply spiritual and sunlit narrative, illuminating a much needed hope as we approach Easter,’ explains the composer. ‘Greta’s playing is highly expressive with a beautiful, translucent sound – it was so inspiring to hear her breathe such visionary meaning into my music. Whilst Theresa’s ability to translate and illuminate the musical narrative through film was equally breathtaking.'

Greta Mutlu reflects on the creative process from the perspective of the soloist: ‘It was a lovely surprise to receive the very first copy of Gethsemane by personal delivery from the composer herself. Deborah's composition is powerful, full of nuance, and exquisitely crafted. The way she harnesses the violin's natural resonance fills the music with luminous beauty and gripping expression. I relished the chance to bring this piece to life and the journey was made smooth by having the composer nearby to answer any questions – a true luxury!

‘Theresa's commitment to beauty and storytelling added something truly special to the piece. I loved seeing it anew through her lens. The final result is a testament to her incredible talent and craft.
