Today we take a trip to the 16th century with Philip de Monte's Voce Mea ad Dominim Clamavi performed by Apollo5. This recording is part of 'Live from London Christmas 2023', a series of streamed concerts of an assortment of festival choral works running from 4 December to 7 January. Voce Mea also features on Apollo5's most recent album, 'Haven' which was released in October.

Despite being born in Mechelen and singing in the St Rumbold's Cathedral choir as a boy, Philip de Monte spent the majority of his professional life in Italy - as many composers of that time did. Known now for his extensive output of secular madgrigals, de Monte was widely published and performed in Europe with over 40 masses to his name. Voce Mea ad Dominim Clamavi (I cried unto the Lord with my voice) is a setting of Psalm 142 and is written in a florid counterpoint that was very popular in its day.
