The English soprano on the fascinating story behind her new Chandos album

The soprano Louise Alder has just released her first recording for Chandos. It’s called ‘Lines written during a sleepless night: The Russian Connection’ and finds her joined by the pianist Joseph Middleton in songs by Tchaikovsky, Sibelius, Grieg, Medtner and Britten. Her first album, for Orchid Classics, found her again with Joseph Middleton and explored the music of Richard Strauss. In Gramophone Hugo Shirley wrote ‘Of all the new recordings I've heard this year, I'm not sure any has given such unalloyed pleasure as Louise Alder's debut recital: an irresistible Strauss programme sung with a beguiling twinkle in the eye, keen intelligence and a voice of sparkling beauty.’ It was made an Editor’s Choice in our September 2017 issue.

Louise Alder was in London this week to launch the album at Wigmore Hall and James Jolly took the opportunity to catch up with her to talk about the new Chandos release.
