Clarity of articulation is one of Willens’s hallmarks in these lovingly prepared performances which will surely win many new friends for Liechtenauer’s music

Liechtenauer (1673/4-1756), a contemporary of the baroque giants of Bach, Handel and Telemann, was employed for over 40 years at the Cathedral of Osnabrück as Kapellmeister and organist. The CD under review presents four of his six masses Op 2, modest, liturgically conceived masses that made their way through the churches, monasteries and smaller courts in Catholic southern Germany and elsewhere during his lifetime. Willens employs modest vocal and instrumental forces in this attractive music, which shares some similarities with Mozart’s Salzburg church compositions. Clarity of articulation is one of Willens’s hallmarks in these lovingly prepared performances which will surely win many new friends for Liechtenauer’s music.
